Every winter, Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Hawaiian Islands to nurse their calves. The island of Maui is particularly special this time of year because the shallow waters surrounding the island serve as a “nursery” of sorts for the baby humpbacks. Because of the high concentration of whales (and their proximity to shore), you can sometimes hear the males speaking to each other while snorkeling.

Now encroached on by developers, the Luckey Ranch is a snapshot of how progress and legacy co-exist.

“I don’t want to come out of this pandemic only to get back to business as usual, lost in a sea of to-do lists and appointments on my calendar. I want something more meaningful and intentional than that.”

As I gear up for my second trip to Hawaii and reflect on 2019, I thought it was the perfect time to finally share photos and videos from when I went freediving with sharks on the North Shore of Oahu.
