On the island of Maui, sits the dormant volcano Haleakala, which means, “house of the sun.” According to legend, the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here by standing on the volcano to create the crater.

Every winter, Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Hawaiian Islands to nurse their calves. The island of Maui is particularly special this time of year because the shallow waters surrounding the island serve as a “nursery” of sorts for the baby humpbacks. Because of the high concentration of whales (and their proximity to shore), you can sometimes hear the males speaking to each other while snorkeling.

Now encroached on by developers, the Luckey Ranch is a snapshot of how progress and legacy co-exist.

Oahu is surrounded by incredible snorkeling, freediving, and surfing. On this particular morning, we explored the far northwest side of the island. Dolphins, honu, and porcupine fish are just some of the incredible wildlife you can catch sight of off this quiet, sandy beach.
