On the island of Maui, sits the dormant volcano Haleakala, which means, “house of the sun.” According to legend, the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here by standing on the volcano to create the crater.

The island of Maui is particularly special this time of year because the shallow waters surrounding the island serve as a “nursery” of sorts for the baby humpbacks. Because of the high concentration of whales (and their proximity to shore), you can sometimes hear the males speaking to each other while snorkeling.
